I watched a Korean woman with a small dog go camping
Kirin camp

I was browsing YouTube and noticed the algorithm serving me up oddly dramatic thumbnails of an attractive young woman camping. The thumbnails were high quality with the emphasis on drama, usually in rain or snow and her hyper inflated chest. As I have an interested in camping I decided to check it out. The channel was called Kirin Camp.

The video was exactly what the thumbnail promised and more. A pretty Korean woman in a tight shirt setting up a campsite. The video was professionally shot with precise and well chosen angles. There was no talking, it wasn’t overly sexualized, it had nice atmospheric sound and the dog was very cute. The camp set up was a series of professional product shots of an amazing campsite that I would never set up. I found myself drawn into the video and sat there for an hour while Kirin set up a campsite complete with a TV in a suitcase.

The video caught me because it was soothing to watch the setup in semi-silence. Kirin, Korean cooking and camp gadgets had me hooked. I probably sat there for an hour before I started to really evaluate what I was watching. It was a long and extremely professional commercial designed to pull me in and it worked. At the time of writing the Kirin Camp channel had 142 videos and 1.95 million subscribers. It is a money making machine. Considering the number of subscribers and views per video, the revenue should be in the tens of thousands per month. The sponsorships would be an added revenue stream adding to the value. Kirin Camp Instagram is another stream directing watchers to YouTube and sponsors. In the end, I was impressed with how masterfully I was hooked and pulled in.

Kirin Camp is obviously working well as I was able to find a number of clones almost immediately. Not just copies, but almost exact clones right down to the little dog, Korean cooking, Instagram and Korean woman. The formula is there and I wonder if they’re from the same masterful team of creators.

The large online platforms serve up content designed to separate us from our money. I spent enough time watching Kirin Camp for me to have set up my own amazing campsite and actually camp outside. Advertisers have evolved to worm their way into every aspect of online life. Even as someone aware of the formulas I was snared. I’m probably late to the game on this one, but I’m impressed at how well done this advertisement was.
